No matter how good you are at baking your own cakes there is nothing nicer than receiving a box of “made just for you” cakes from Kitchen at 4a.
The lockdown, whilst pretty miserable for the majority of us, has brought friends and family closer together, not in a physical way, but in a virtual way. This is where Rachael from Kitchen at 4a saw a glimmer of hope with a diversification of her baking business.
She told us “When the pandemic hit I was about to see my best couple of months ever (out of the 2 ½ years I have been seriously running Kitchen at 4a). With 5 weddings booked for April and another 3 in the following months I was devastated when everything started being cancelled”.
“After being furloughed from my full time I decided to shift my efforts into continuing to grow my business but in a different direction, by offering smaller cakes.”
Having trained as a pastry chef at Westminster Kingsway College, then worked in a couple of London bakeries, Rachael decided she wanted a job closer to home. “I’ve been heading the cake section at Pantry Hazlemere for the last 5 years now and making wedding cakes as a side business with Kitchen at 4a. I also provide wholesale cakes to the Front Room and the Apple Orchard in West Wycombe.”
For the past few weeks Rachael has been offering mini 5” cakes which give the perfect isolation amount of 4-6 slices, cupcakes, and brownies. The brownies, vegan caramel and gluten free tahini milk chocolate can be sent via post to loved ones who are far away. Her letterbox brownies have been incredibly successful, and no wonder, they are a delight to receive; indulgent, gooey and oh so moreish.
Macarons are a Kitchen at 4a speciality. Single flavour boxes are available for pre-order from https://www.kitchenat4a.com/ and then occasionally flash sales occur where there are a limited amount of mixed flavour boxes. Recently 15 boxes were snapped up in under 10 minutes Rachael told us, and we can understand why. They might just be the nicest macarons we have ever eaten; crisp on the outside but with a chewy centre and a middle layer so full of flavour we just don’t know how she does it.
We loved our lockdown box of sweet treats; it really made our day. There honestly isn’t anything nicer than receiving a unique gift like this from family you can’t see.
