Blooming bluebells and spring surprises at the National Trust’s Cliveden

This spring Cliveden estate is teeming with new life. The formal gardens stun with thousands of colourful spring bedding plants on the Parterre and Long Garden. Whilst over in the ancient woodlands, a sparkling sea of English bluebells wait to be discovered at the National Trust’s Cliveden this season.

Every spring the gardens at Cliveden are a delight to behold, and this is year is no exception. The six-acre Parterre bursts at the seams with 21,000 spring bedding plants. In the Long Garden, 11,000 pretty pink and white Bellis bellissima create a carpet of colour inside the box hedging, whilst topiary, statuary and herbaceous borders line the outside of this unusual garden.

In the oriental inspired Water Garden, you’ll find the dusky pinks of flowering blossom and creamy-white magnolias forming photographic reflections in the lakes below. From May there’ll be 2,000 pale blue Camassia leichtlinii in bloom, adding more glamour to this already scenic garden.

Take a walk beyond the Grade I listed gardens at Cliveden and you’ll find yourself surrounded in a woodland escarpment. As you wander through these magnificent ancient woodlands in late April and early May, a beautiful bluebell bounty will slowly begin to appear. You can go on a self-guided walk with Cliveden’s Bluebell Walk leaflet. These walks have been specially designed by the ranger team in the hope of conserving Cliveden’s delicate English bluebells, prone to damage due to their delicate nature. Leaflets can be collected from the Information Centre and are free of charge, usual admission to Cliveden applies.

Whilst at Cliveden, why not try some other fun spring activities on site? There are boat cruises down the Thames, skippered by knowledgeable locals. Or book onto a guided house tour, a special chance to peek inside Cliveden’s iconic mansion house.

From spring gardens to woodlands walks, to guided tours and river cruises, there’s so much to see and do at Cliveden, we know you won’t be able to visit just once!
