Bubble& Café Bar

Since the end of February, twice-Michelin starred chef Atul Kochhar’s restaurant, Hawykns, has played host to the Bubble& Café Bar. We went down to Old Amersham to try out some of the imaginative dishes on offer.
 

Running as a pop-up restaurant, Bubble& Café Bar is the brainchild of Marita and Rupert, the husband-and-wife team who received investment from restauranteur Atul Kochhar on BBC Two’s My Million Pound Menu. A unique concept, Bubble& have created a range of meals that take an innovative (and certainly delicious!) spin on the British classic Bubble and Squeak. Now, after running market stalls in London and Portsmouth, catering for parties and weddings, and even picking up two Great Taste Awards along the way, Bubble& have set up in Old Amersham high street at Hawykns by Atul Kochhar.

Bubble& boasts separate lunch and dinner menus, allowing the full extent of Marita and Rupert’s ingenious creativity to shine through. From their signature Bubble& Classic, offering bubble and squeak, a soft poached free-range egg, smoked streaky bacon and hollandaise sauce, to their Bubble& Wrap, a tortilla containing a sweet potato-based bubble and squeak, the dishes are varied and innovative, with vegetarian and vegan options to cater to all requirements. If you fancy something even more inventive, there’s always a daily special that will turn the head of even the fussiest foodie. To top it off, they have their own desserts including a Sticky Toffee Baked Alaska and a range of sorbets (I’ll personally recommend the coconut sorbet, an absurdly creamy dessert that was perfect to finish the meal.) And, with menu items coming in at as little as £4, Bubble& is more than reasonably priced.

Hawkyns is the perfect venue for the vibe Marita and Rupert are trying to create too; the indoor bar area is intimate and cosy, lit with fairy-lights curling around the old-fashioned wooden beams. And, if you’re lucky with the weather like we were on an unbelievably warm March day, the outside patio is an ideal space to enjoy the culinary delights, with plenty of natural light letting you marvel at the beautiful, Grade-II listed building’s old-fashioned brickwork and cobbled tiles.

So, with high-quality dishes at prices that won’t break the bank, Bubble& is the perfect place for a casual lunch or a formal dinner date. But get there soon – this pop-up won’t be around forever!

Bubble& Café Bar is open from 11am to 10pm daily at Hawkyns by Atul Kochhar on Old Amersham High Street.
