Bucks Black History Museum Group’s Black History Shoe Project

Discover Bucks Museum

The Discover Bucks Museum (formerly Bucks County Museum) has been going through a few new exciting changes recently. One of the changes is that they have created the museum’s first ever Bucks Black History Museum Group (BBHMG) which was established in February 2021.

The group meet on the first Tuesday of the month to create and shape museum’s activities focusing on Black History and the group are currently working on two projects, one of which is a Digital Shoe project titled ‘Looking back, walking forward: a Black History shoe project’. They are inviting the Bucks Black commuity to get involved by taking a photo of their shoes to tell their story.

The project was inspired by thr late Mr Alphonse’s wedding shoes which were donated to the Museum in 2020. Mr Alphonse’s shoes, and story, represent a piece in the picture of the contribution made by the Black community to the history of Britain. You can see the shoes on display and you’ll be able to read Mr Alphonse’s story at the museum when the new redeveloped galleries open.

Photos and stories are published on the museum website, you can have a read of the entries so far here www.discoverbucksmuseum.org/collections/looking-back-walking-forward-a-black-history-shoe-project/

The group is open to all Bucks people (the Black and non-Black Community) and is a voluntary role. If you would like to join this museum group, email community@discoverbucksmuseum.org and put ‘BBHMG’ in the subject box to find out more.
