Places to Visit

Gibraltar, Nr. Aylesbury

Now I know what you’re thinking, we took time out of work to visit somewhere hot and sunny on the Mediterranean. No, we didn’t, we visited the tiny hamlet of Gibraltar in Bucks. Blink and you’ll miss it, but believe me we thought it was well worth the visit.

A handful of houses and one pub, that sums it up. But the houses are beautifully thatched and surrounded by open countryside full of scenic footpaths. Unfortunately we weren’t dressed for a muddy walk, although the sun was shining and the views would have been amazing, we avoided all temptation.

We did manage to grab a bite to eat in the lovely Bottle & Glass pub though. Re-opened in 2007 after a devastating fire, the new owners have turned this establishment into a beautiful one roomed gastro pub, with half of the room being set up with restaurant tables and the other half like a traditional pub; we sat by the roaring log fire.

The food is cooked to order so my starter of goats cheese and red onion tart took a while to arrive but it was delicious. We skipped mains and went straight for desserts; well it was lunchtime and we were heading back to the office! The cheesecake of the day didn’t disappoint, and neither did the apple and caramel crumble.

A quick trip to the loo and we were on our way. Personally I think the toilets give a very good indication of how somewhere is managed; they were very clean and, dare I say it, really rather pleasant!

We were actually returning from Oxford when we thought we would take the scenic route back through Bucks, instead of driving down the M40. Situated on the A418 Gibraltar is just over 20 miles away and about a 45 minute drive from Beaconsfield/Wooburn. We drove back past Orchard View Farm in Little Meadle, which is where we went earlier on in the year for their Sausage and Beer Festival (we will definitely be going to this again next year). They have a good farm shop which is worth stopping off for. Visit www.orchardviewfarm.co.uk for more info.

If you fancy a change of scenery we recommend visiting Gibraltar, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.
