Old meets new: The Polecat Inn restaurant review

After a total rebrand and re-opening since investment from the Oakman Inns group, The Polecat Inn is open in Prestwood. We took the trip out to some beautiful Bucks countryside for a delicious meal at their brand-new gastropub.

Built into a Grade II listed building, The Polecat Inn has a feeling of upmarket class without being pretentious or exclusive; I felt perfectly comfortable in my t-shirt and jeans. The restaurant itself feels roomy and comfortable, helped by high ceilings and large windows allowing lots of natural light. The open-plan seating in the centre creates a lively and buzzy atmosphere, with booths set around the edges for a more intimate meal. If you’re just there for a drink rather than a meal, the bar section retains the aesthetics of an old-fashioned English pub, and there are also plans for a van serving beer on the outside terrace for a proper summer’s day.

The menu is impressively varied, with an emphasis on Mediterranean-inspired cuisine (chicken in a picante marinade, a Marinara pizza, a House Caesar salad with salted anchovies and pancetta) but there’s plenty of pub classics, like slow-roasted pork belly and Josper-grilled steaks. It’s also a vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free paradise, with plenty of fantastic options for those diets clearly labelled on the menu (I opted for the Vegan No Pollo pizza, featuring pieces of The Vegetarian Butcher’s chicken that was frankly unbelievable.) The dessert options are also wide-ranging and fantastic; it is still a source of great sadness to me that I was too full from my main that I couldn’t manage the vegan Sticky Toffee Pudding.

With a great menu populated with reasonable prices in an environment suited to a celebratory meal or drinks with your friends, The Polecat Inn is a versatile venue with fantastic food that will keep you coming back.
