I offered my brother a cupcake one evening last week when he got home from work. There’s nothing particularly unusual about this, although my sudden burst of generosity may have confused him slightly. When I asked him to tell me his thoughts of it, I’m fairly sure he guessed I was going to write about it. But, nevertheless, he obliged – free food does usually do the trick. “It’s one of the best cupcakes I’ve ever eaten” he said.
The difference between this one and the others he’s eaten – this one was gluten free. As a staunch avoider of all “free from” foods, I felt he would be the ultimate judge of the cupcake’s quality. His unequivocal praise of it confirmed to me that they are delicious. My brother still doesn’t know it was gluten free, so let’s hope he doesn’t read this…
I also tasted some of Bakerbones other cupcakes, all of which were incredibly creative. Aesthetically, the combination of buttercream icing, ganache and biscuits was presented impeccably and created an exciting image. I couldn’t stop myself from diving straight into them.
And the taste certainly lived up to its look. I’d been concerned that placing biscuits in icing would make them soggy, but the texture worked well, and the vanilla cupcake paved the way for the other flavours to come through strongly.
My personal favourite was the Bourbon one, although this may have something to do with my love for all things chocolate. I also really enjoyed the Jammy Dodger cupcake. Although it is a sweet biscuit, this didn’t overpower the cake and it created the perfect flavour combination.
Bakerbones is an independently owned buttercream cake and cupcake business located in Chesham Bois. They offer bespoke and personalised cakes, as well as vegan, dairy free and gluten free options. Customers have the option to collect, or delivery can be arranged within a 30 mile radius of Chesham Bois for a small charge.
Their Instagram feed is littered with pictures of designs for hen parties, birthday parties and baby showers, all of which are carefully designed and handcrafted.
Now I think it’s time for me to head to the gym before I eat any more cupcakes.
