Review: Phoenix Tea Rooms

We couldn’t help ourselves. We just had to return to the Phoenix Tea Rooms!

Having previously visited on a dark, damp day early this year we promised ourselves we would return when the sun was shining and the garden was in full bloom.

So …. on a scorchingly hot day in July we returned to enjoy a scrumptious homemade lunch.

Everything on the menu, no matter what you order, is homemade. Each ingredient is chosen for its freshness with many vegetables, fruit and salad items being hand picked by the staff from the Claydon Estate grounds. Ingredients that need to be sourced from elsewhere have a maximum carbon footprint of just 30 miles and this is a distance they hope to decrease in the coming months.

Our top tip is to turn up ravenous (if you aren’t starving have a good walk around the grounds until you are). The portion sizes are extremely generous and for the cost we reckon the Phoenix Tea Rooms are offering fantastic value for money.

Chatting to the staff we realised they are all as equally passionate about what the tea rooms have to offer as the catering manager. It’s like eating in a home kitchen, where the food has been lovingly prepared and served and they are all eager to please; this wasn’t just because we were reviewing the restaurant, we know from our previous visit that this service is offered time and again.

Our favourite item on the menu so far is the Phoenix Burger; don’t just take our word for it, go and try it for yourselves! For £10.95 enjoy a homemade 6oz beef patty topped with mature cheddar, Woburn black smoked bacon and homemade tomato chutney in a toasted bun, served with homemade chips, a salad garnish and phoenix coleslaw (GF option also available). Yum!

With free parking, beautiful surroundings and a section of the restaurant stocking produce from local artisan producers the Phoenix Tea Rooms are definitely a MUST visit.

Admittedly it is an hour’s drive from our base in Wooburn Green but the drive through the countryside is lovely and whilst you are there you can spend hours browsing the art galleries, the grounds* and NT gift shop.
