Review: The Woolpack, Stoke Mandeville

The Woolpack Stoke Mandeville

Some refurbs are minimal, others are transformational, and in the case of The Woolpack in Stoke Mandeville, it is definitely the latter. We went to check out their makeover and try their delicious seasonal menu.

The ambience as soon as you walk through the door is warm, welcoming and oozing with chicness and style. We noted the William Morris sunflower print sofa calling us so grabbed a wine (from their very extensive drinks list) and took a pew. The lighting is cosy and the wall decor beautiful. We were lured into feeling like we were in a plush living room and our quick pre-dinner drink turned into an hour of chilled conversation.

General Manager Sarah Andrews and the team have achieved a very clever distinction between bar/lounge area and restaurant, almost making it feel like two venues in one. You can leisurely sip a cocktail, enjoy a swift half in the snug-like bar area, or head to the restaurant which echoes the same warmth but in a super suave way with rich green velvet curtains, and more gorgeous fabrics lining the bright, bold seats.

Our Camembert sharing starter was to die for! Served with rosemary chutney and artisan bread for dipping, it immediately hit the spot. The menu caters for vegetarians and offers vegan options – we tried a marguerite pizza and rotisserie pork belly with dauphinois. Both equally tasty and beautifully presented. A crème brûlée and homemade cookie and ice cream (lots of flavours to choose from) later and we were ready to pop!

No evening would be complete without the obligatory trip to the loo, and even they were a cut above.

Well done The Woolpack. Your team were friendly and patient (with our indecisiveness!), your parking is plentiful and your gorgeous refurb was the cherry on top. Our only advice if you’re eating in is to have an elasticated waistband!

It’s definitely going to be the place to visit over the festive season.

And finally, the large outdoor space, decked out with new furniture, patio heaters and glass screens, can host up to two hundred people, making it ideally suited for private hire for events.
