Shopping for essentials

Most of us do not need to leave the house, remember staying home saves lives, it’s important to give those who need to still shop for essential items a list of places they can go to.

See below a variation of businesses still selling items you might need during this difficult time at home.

Lloyd’s Wines

Red, White or Rose?
Lloyd’s Wines are here to deliver to your door.

Lloyd’s Wines is an independent wine retailer and wholesaler based in the heart of the Chilterns, run by Simon and Sally Lloyd. Their quirky, ‘Mad Hatter’ themed wine shop, The Stables, near Great Missenden, stocks a range of exciting, rare and wonderful wines, sourced from the best small producers in the UK, Europe and further afield.

Lloyd’s passion for great wine is apparent; every bottle they stock is personally hand-selected. Simon says “We specialise in low-yield wines that are under-priced for their quality, bringing you something that cannot be found in the larger retailers. Often, these wines have never been imported to the UK.”

Lloyd’s usually enjoys hosting bi-monthly tastings, showcasing wines for all budgets, and ‘The Stables’ accommodates private dinner parties as well as fun pop-up pub nights. However, in the current Covid crisis, whilst the supermarkets’ shelves are being stripped bare, Simon is looking after his customers by delivering wine cases 7 days a week to your door(step)!

No account is necessary and payment is made via BACS or over the phone. There is a minimum spend of £50 per order (can be a mixed case) and if you happen to live within 25 miles of the shop (HP16) then the delivery is FREE!
To order, call Simon on 07547 645917 or email

The Kings Head, Aylesbury

We’ve opened a Food Hall/Farm Shop in the old stables in our courtyard, selling staple foods – milk, bread, eggs, flour, veg and fruit and coffee. We also have draught and bottled beers, wines, soft-drinks, tea and coffee and meals for takeaway.

We really want to support and help our local area and those who live in the town centre and around us; as well as wanting to look after our staff and keep ourselves busy! So as soon as we heard the announcement Friday 20th March, that all pubs had to close, we set about creating a shop and stocked it from scratch in 48 hours. It was an empty stable on Friday night, but by Sunday night, all we needed was the veg and fruit to put out on display.

Using the amazing local suppliers who we have worked with for years, we’ve had constant deliveries and we keep in touch daily to make sure we have regular deliveries.

“We are so proud of our staff who have worked hard with us to get our shop up and running, and our suppliers who are working with us to keep stocks up. These are such unusual times that sticking together, keeping in touch and not letting our spirits drop, is important!”

Opening hours are 10am until 7pm, although these could change depending on when we find customers want to come in – in either case it is very different from what we’re used to with pub hours! We use social media throughout the day, to let everyone know what we’re doing, what we have in stock and what we’re expecting the next day. We also love to hear what customers would like us to stock.

We have bread from Tring, eggs from Aylesbury, milk and butter due in from Prestwood, bacon and sausages from Aylesbury too and of course great beer to take away in 2 & 4 pint containers from The Chiltern Brewery! All our veg and fruit comes to us via our local supplier in Aylesbury.

The King’s Head has been the heart of Aylesbury for 565 years. In that time, we have weathered all manner of local, national and international happenings – ‘Flu pandemics, Civil war, world wars and by the grace of God, we shall weather this too! We have no intention of closing our doors and want to do all we can to help and support those around us.

Pinewood Nurseries, Stoke Poges

As this pandemic evolves we have taken the decision to close our shop at 6pm Tuesday 24th March and move to a click and collect pre-order service. We feel changing to a collection only service is best for the foreseen future to protect our customers and our staff, and follow the government guidelines.

We will be launching an easy online order service in the next few days. You’ll be able to order essentials and collect them on either Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We will be closed all the other days preparing these orders and ensuring our supply chain is not under pressure.

With the online system, which will be taking orders for next week, you will pay £5 deposit and then the balance on collection, which will be through the window of the shop by card and then we’ll bring your box out in a trolley. This will keep us all safe.

Next week we are hoping to be able to give customers a one hour slot which we hope people will stick to. So we can ensure that there is a queue at no point.

People will be sent a link on their collection day to pay the balance only if they have someone else collecting the order. Otherwise, it will be easier for us if you just pay by card when you collect, but of course our priority is keeping things smooth and easy for our elderly and those self-isolating.

We are trying our upmost, and will be adding COOK meals, local cakes and plants and compost to the form over the coming weeks.

We are very grateful to the volunteers who have come forward to assist with this website development.

Roast Lab Coffee Roasters

We are still running our online business. We are respecting the 2 metre social distancing and are giving local customers the option to collect from us, leaving the parcel outside of the premises and making only online transactions. We also offer free delivery to our local customers in Farnham common, using the same method as collections or we post packages out further afield.

We are happy to share that after a recent food inspection by South Bucks District Council, we received a 5* Food Hygiene rating. Measures we take as standard are:

  • Storing our green and roasted beans separately in official food grade safe barrels with air, water and tamper proof tight seals
  • Wearing gloves and hair nets whilst working to prevent contamination
  • Washing our hands regularly with hot soapy water for at least 20 seconds
  • Cleaning and sanitising all preparation and work surfaces before and after each use

We are adhering to Government guidelines and will stay open for business while respecting the social distancing and non-contact regulations.

Hughenden Village Stores

We are absolutely committed to helping our community during this crisis, whilst ensuring the safety of our volunteers and staff. We have therefore re-assessed our processes and can now advise how we will go forward for the time being – we will become your ‘Home Delivery Hub’.

This means that we will not be open for customers to enter the shop, but we will be open for daily customer orders for home delivery. (The Coffee Shop has converted into the delivery control centre!) Orders will initially only be taken over the phone, however, we are considering the possibility of accepting email orders too – we will confirm this in due course.

We can take urgent, small shopping requests and card payments at the door although we wish to keep these to an absolute minimum as the phone is constantly ringing and our focus will be on fulfilling the orders for delivery. We have a large team of willing delivery volunteers at the ready, and most of our suppliers are still able, and planning to, deliver as it stands at the moment.

In the immediate future, we will therefore be open Monday – Saturday from 11am – 3pm for telephone orders to the shop – 01494 568653. We may be able to extend these hours until 4pm depending on demand, but we will advise of this as and when it becomes necessary and viable. Delivery volunteers will then be on a rota to collect the bags and deliver throughout the afternoon.

For key workers such as teachers still teaching in schools, emergency service and healthcare workers, we understand that you will probably not be able to make phone calls during your day, so we are happy for you to drop off shopping lists in a designated box outside the shop and we will make this order up for you. (Please leave your name and telephone number and we will call you later for payment).
For the safety of our volunteers and staff, all shop activities will be broken down into specific, separate time frames to ensure that staff are able to safely social distance from each other, whilst continuing with the vital activities of the shop.

Local business products we can offer are: Darvell’s Bakery fresh bread, Wells Farm Dairy milk, Blackwood’s Foods of Henley ham, cheese and yoghurts, Beechwood Eggs, Absolute Cuisine pies and frozen ready meals, Chiltern Farm bacon and Timpson’s Smallholding meat such as minced beef, chicken breasts, lamb chops and sausages.
