First Impressions Count – and they certainly weren’t lacking as we revisited The Spade Oak, just before it was about to re-open after a 4 week refurb.
This was a regular haunt of ours with the family for lunch, dinner or a girl’s night out and I’m pleased to report .. it’s been renewed and refreshed, with a new MD and chefs – and is well on its way back to its former glory.
The new exterior is fresh and smart and allows for plenty of outside seating space in different areas. The interior benefits from the great addition of a private dining area for 30, with its own doors out to the patio and garden. Personally, I loved the lounge and bar area. It’s really tastefully designed with comfortable seating around a couple of fireplaces, and definitely the place to grab a sofa and make time for an aperitif before dining – or I’d quite happy spend the evening at the bar making my way through the gin and cocktail list!
With low lighting and plush furnishings, the opulent décor really does the place justice making you feel you are somewhere special and, if you feel up to it, you could really dress up for the occasion and not feel out of place.
The menu was pretty impressive too – plenty of choice for everyone with ‘Posh Pub’ food and it was very nice to see that they have a Pure Vegan menu too. In fact, there’s so much choice that you’d have to come back a few times to satisfy your taste buds (unless you have a partner who’s prepared to share).
Portions are pretty large so try as I might, I just couldn’t fit in a dessert after cocktails, starter and main, even when I saw a rather large ‘Passion Fruit Martini Eton Mess’ go past and apparently it’s just for one (over 18’s only!).
So, I’m going again. I definitely want to try out their lunch menu after a walk along the river and then I’ll be rounding up my girlfriends for a luxury night out.
