Food & Drink Reviews

We have only recently discovered award-winning TwelveBelow., a natural low calorie tonic water produced in the Hughenden Valley.

Inspired by their garden in the Chiltern Hills, the founders set about crafting the UK’s first all natural low sugar tonic in 2018.

Now with four flavours to choose from, Apple & Mint, Rhubarb & Ginger, Pear & Cardamom and Classic Premium, they are going from strength to strength and have just won GOLD at the National 2020 FreeFrom Awards in the Drinks Category.

Now don’t think of this tonic as something that has to be served with it’s usual gin accompaniment. We enjoyed drinking it by itself, as a soft drink, a mid-week treat without the calories or the hangover. The Apple & Mint was crisp and refreshing, and reminded us of a hot summer’s day where this would definitely be a drink of choice. Pimm’s and TwelveBelow. would be an excellent idea.

The Pear & Cardamom took us back to our childhood with it’s subtle resemblance to the old fashioned sweet pear drops, something we haven’t eaten in years. It’s hard to believe there is no added sugar, being sweetened with just a touch of organic natural agave. Each 100 ml has just 12 calories meaning a regular sized bottle of tonic (200 ml) has only 24.

Of course, the Classic Premium is the perfect accompaniment to gin, but it would also work very well with any spirit, and would be an excellent mixer for cocktails.

Whatever your tipple, we think TwelveBelow. is the perfect answer.

TwelveBelow. is available to purchase from several outlets here in Bucks, including Peterley Manor Farm, Lloyds Wines, P.E. Mead & Sons and Malt the Brewery.
